How to survive Christmas… and enjoy it!

How to survive Christmas ...and enjoy it!

Those who know me well know that I’ve never really been into Christmas, and rather I’ve always tried to get through December as fast as possible and attend lunchs, dinners and other events with all the enthusiasm that I was able to show.

It’s not that I don’t like Christmas. All the obligations created around it are what I don’t like. In fact, I don’t like obligations of any kind.

I don’t understand why we have to share our table with certain people whom we are not eager to see through the rest of the year just because it’s Christmas.

And what about pretending to be happy just because “it’s time to be happy”…? No! Happiness is not something you have to pretend, it’s something you have to look for and build every day.

Besides, precisely these days may be harder for some people, because we miss the ones who aren’t already here, or because we don’t get along well with the ones who are, and other times, for all I’ve already said, we just don’t feel like celebrating Christmas.

When you want to run away from all this, the best you can do is going somewhere, far away, where it’s not winter.

My favourite places for this are Miami and Morocco (but there are many other places where you can get away to spend a non-traditional Christmas).

If your budget is not enough to do this, I recommend you to keep busy.

The best thing you can do, if possible, is working  (work extra hours, offer yourself to cover a coworker who wants to take a holiday, etc…)

If working is not possible, then offer yourself as a volunteer for anything that makes you feel useful (community kitchens, NGOs, etc…)

How to survive Christmas ....and enjoy it

Once my anti-Christmas position is defended, I must confess that this year I feel an unusual Christmas spirit.

This year has been so good, almost spectacular.

I’m exultant, in a phase of expansion, creativity and wanting more, mucho more…

This euphoria that has accompanied me through 2013, makes me more eager for Christmas to come than ever.

My travel agenda can take no more, because otherwise I promise you I would take a plane to New York on December the 24th and would come back on January the 1st to spend Christmas and New Year’s Eve in one of the biggest Christmas sceneries in the world (even though I don’t like the cold I would happily do it).

But as it’s not going to be possible (at least this year…), I’ve decided that I’m going to spend my most home-loving Christmas week of the past 20 years!!

1-      Put up small Christmas decorations throughout my home.

2-      Join my loved ones to enjoy the typical meals.

3-      Watch my two favourite Christmas movies: Love Actually and The Holiday.

4-      Dream about Andrew Lincoln knocking on my door.

5-      Dream about Jude Law knocking on my door.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdGbKvi8PYQ]

6-      Listen to the soundtrack of both movies over and over again, specially the song “All I want for Christmas is you”

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ghkHlthIqM]

7-      On my birthday (Saturday this year), have a hot chocolate with a croissant, or a ensaimada, or…a cronut for breakfast!! While I don’t stop putting into practice points 4 and 5.

8-      On my birthday eve, gather with the ones who make me happy to celebrate how wonderful I feel and how happy I am for being able to count on them.

9-      The day after my birthday, have a typical New Yorker brunch with a Bloody Mary

10-   Get ready to say goodbye to this year and make my wishes for the one who’s coming.

And how about you? Do you feel like doing something different this Christmas? Or you’d rather prefer a traditional one?

I would love you to participate giving me your point of view, here or on Facebook.

Happy Holidays!!!

Love Actually

The Holiday

All I want for Christmas is you “

Felices fiestas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
